Thanksgiving Night, 2014 – Part 2
Late at night Thanksgiving Day. Another day comes and goes, and here we are, belly full, tired of too much football (at least Detroit won), kitchen clean (hopefully your didn’t let it wait until tomorrow, or maybe you did and that’s OK), drank too much (or maybe not), and reflected on all that there is. In our little part of the world the darkness begins to take over and gradually the lights go out and we each find some peace in the day as we snuggle down in our homes for the night.
Sometimes its the darkness that I like, it provides a chance to really reflect and remember all those that came before me and are no longer here (and the older we get, the longer that list becomes), and hope for better things for those that come after. Thanksgiving Day, and much like the post I began the day with, at the dinner table, did you discuss what you were thankful for?
There is a simple phrase I sometimes use when sitting at the dinner table, usually after the blessing, just to break the silence, Good Food, Good Meat, Good God, Lets Eat. Simple and at the same time can say so much. Sometimes it becomes the simple phrases that impact each of us even more. On my cell phone I used to have a simple phrase, “Flush”. For all you educators in my life you probably know where that phrase came from (if you don’t… you should). It appears on the dust jacket of “All I Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” by Robert Fulghum.
“Flush” was one of his lessons. He had others, but, on this day November 27, 2014, it may be the most appropriate lesson to learn. Tomorrow morning, when we all wake up (and I understand some of you may not actually read this until tomorrow morning, in fact some may not ever read it at all), anyway tomorrow morning we wake up the day is new, the sun may or may not be out, it may or may not be raining, or snowing, it probably will be a bit cold, it is a good day to simply “Flush”, as every new day should be a good day to “Flush”.
Begin by telling someone you care, that you love them for who they are, that you are there for them if needed. Begin by caring about “Life, the Universe, and Everything” (another favorite author Douglas Adams). As the Black Eyed Peas say…. “Where is the Love?” To my family and friends and you all fit into one of those categories, “Good Night, Sleep Tight, and Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite.” I love you all. O, Yea.. and search out and listen to the Peas, “Where is the love?”
